Sweet Grass County is a large and remote county covering more than 1850 square miles. The county covers more than 75 miles from the northern edge to the southern edge. The Big Timber Volunteer Fire Department, under the leadership of Fire Chief Kris Novotny, is in charge of fire protection throughout the county. Several rural departments help with that charge including the Melville Volunteer Fire Department lead by Chief Matt Cremer, McLeod Volunteer Fire Department lead by Chief Stuart Stenberg, the Bridger Creek Fire Brigade and the Deer Creek Fire Brigade.
