Driver’s Licenses

MONTANA RESIDENTS
A Montana driver’s license expires on your birthday. It can be renewed up to six months before the expiration date.

To renew, your current driver’s license must be presented to the examiner, and if renewing a commercial license, a current medical card & certified birth certificate must also be presented.

DRIVER EXAMINER is in Sweet Grass County every Wednesday except the first Wednesday of the month. Hours are 8:00-3:15, walk-ins for Montana renewals ONLY will be worked in between appointments from 8:00-12:00 but appointments are encouraged. For Driver License Appointment Scheduling log on to doj.mt.gov/driving to schedule an appointment for all knowledge testing, road testing, and out of state license transfers. If you can’t make an appointment on line you may call 1-866-450-8034 for assistance.

OUT OF STATE LICENSE
People with an out-of-state license who wish to obtain a Montana driver’s license must apply for a Montana driver’s license within 60 days of moving to the state for a regular driver’s license and within 30 days for a commercial driver’s license.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS
– Proof of identification (valid driver’s license, social security card)
– Proof of Montana residence ( something that shows a residential address, not a PO box)
– Proof of authorized presence ( green card, passport, certified copy of a birth certificate)
– Current medical card is required for commercial drivers.
